Bernie Ray Stokes “Daddy Ray”, a beloved father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather
and friend, was born on November 14, 1949, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Porter G. Stokes Sr.
and Robbie Stokes. His life’s journey, filled with love, dedication, and laughter, reached its
ultimate healing on January 3, 2025. Bernie’s legacy is one of resilience, loyalty, and a heart that
touched all who knew him.
A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Bernie answered the call to serve his country
during the Vietnam War, embodying courage and commitment. After his military service, he
transitioned into civilian life with the same dedication, building a successful career with Storer
Cable, which later became Comcast. Bernie’s steadfast work ethic and leadership abilities
allowed him to rise to management and supervisory roles, where he left an indelible mark on
colleagues and customers alike.
Bernie’s heart was always with his family, the cornerstone of his life. As a devoted patriarch, he
worked tirelessly to provide for his loved ones, nurturing a strong bond with each of his siblings.
His love extended to his passions—cheering for the Dallas Cowboys, playing men’s softball, and
being a master of the grill. Bernie knew how to throw an unforgettable house party, whether in
Southwest Little Rock or Chino Hills, California. A music lover with a beautiful singing voice,
Bernie’s melodies were a hidden treasure cherished by those fortunate enough to hear them.
Bernie was also a proud pup dad to his fur baby twin Shih Tzus, Snickers and Pepsi, who will
miss him terribly.
Bernie is survived by his daughters, Caprice Stokes, Toya Stokes-Shepherd, and Nakinya Stokes-
Shakur, and his son, Keith Parker. Bernie is also survived by 12 grandchildren and two great-
grandchildren. His siblings include Wyamon Stokes and Alexis Box, and he is preceded in death
by his brothers Porter Stokes Jr. and Anis Shams Al-Din, and sister Eunice Staggers. Bernie’s
best friend and devoted caregiver, Phyllis Stokes-Williams, stood by his side with unwavering
love. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends who will carry his memory in their hearts forever.
