Doris Ann Wilson Lyda Scott McCray Scott, known for her warmth, resilience, and love of
family, was born on April 28, 1941, in Malvern, Arkansas, to the late Fannie Mae Edwards and
Robert Wilson. Raised in Sweet Home, Arkansas, by her beloved grandmother Momma Hattie
and great-grandmother Momma Katie, Doris carried a lifelong love for her home state—perhaps
because it was filled with family, laughter, and cherished memories.
Her faith was her foundation, and Sunday was always her favorite day. After Momma Katie’s
passing, Doris moved to Chicago to reunite with her mother and sister Ruby. There, she
excelled as both a student and an athlete, dominating the volleyball court alongside her lifelong
best friend, Evon Sheppard Banks. Her skills even earned her citywide recognition.
After two years of junior college, Doris took on a new challenge—joining the U.S. Navy. She
later received an honorable discharge upon marrying Paul Scott in 1963, with whom she shared
three wonderful children. Throughout her life, she worked in various roles, even breaking
barriers as one of the first Black telephone operators at the Veterans Administration
hospital—her own version of a “Hidden Figure.”
Doris's children—Paul Devin, Derek, and Dorian—were her greatest joy, and she balanced
motherhood while pursuing her passion as a cosmetologist and earning a degree from Arkansas
Baptist College. In 1986, she married Arthur McCray, welcoming another son, our brother Terrill,
into her life. She later built a career with the U.S. Postal Service, where she worked until her
retirement in 2002.
She had a zest for life, enjoying travel (Vegas), church, puzzle books, game shows, chocolate,
French fries, bingo, playing cards, and even a little gambling (slot machines). But nothing
brought her more joy than time spent with her family.
In 2015, Doris faced breast cancer with courage and grace, later battling bone marrow cancer in
2022. Through it all, she remained strong, surrounded by love and laughter.
She leaves behind a legacy of love in her children—Paul Devin Scott (Marcia), Derek Scott
(Katheryn), Dorian Johnson (Michael), and Terrill McCray (Cina); 13 Grandchildren: TraNita,
Tierani, Patrick, Krys, Terrill Jr, Terrill III, Tarnell, Cinia, Ciniya, Cinill, Derek, Lauren, and Lincoln.
10 Great Grand Children: Jaide, Mason, Marquis, Haven, Malia, Mason, Makayah, Terrill IIII,
Phoenix, and Promise and host of family and friends who will forever cherish her warmth,
wisdom, and unwavering spirit.
Doris lived life fully, loved deeply, and left a beautiful imprint on all who knew her. We will forever be grateful for her sweet and fiery spirit.
