Lemuel “Spider” Brown Egeston, began this life journey on November 17, 1950. He was born to Hazel Brown and William Egeston in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. He left Cotton Plant with his father at age 6yrs and moved to Chicago, where he resided for several years. He then moved to St. Louis and back to Chicago at 14 yrs where he was raised by his two paternal Aunts, Beulah
Egeston and Jeanette Bell, and became the big brother/cousin to Aunt Jeanette’s children, Sabrina and Barry.
Lemuel joined the Green Grove M.B. Church under the leadership of Rev. Clifford Bolden. He served as President of the Usher Board many years and remained faithful as an usher and in membership until he relocated to Little Rock, AR in 2020, where he joined the New Grace Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Virgil Taylor. His favorite scripture was Psalm 23 and his
favorite song was “This Little Light of Mine” which could be heard down the halls during his hospitalizations.
Lemuel completed his GED, trained in a mattress factory and retired from Elkay Steel, in Broadview, IL. He was especially proud whenever he saw a water fountain or sink with the name Elkay. He was affectionately known as “Spider” to his co-workers and close friends.
Despite a disability, Lemuel never complained. He was quick to “Thank the Good Master” and was appreciative of anyone who helped him. He loved to talk “trash” with his nieces and nephews, loved playing checkers, putting puzzles together and was an avid bowler. He loved to talk on the phone and always had a healthy appetite.
Lemuel is preceded in death by his parents, maternal and paternal grandparents. His maternal Grandmother, Bea was instrumental in connecting him with his siblings; one brother Larry Blue, one sister Linda Germany, eight Aunts, four Uncles and his Cousin/Brother Barry Bell.
He will live forever in the hearts of loved ones which include three sisters, Louise Simmons of Little Rock, AR, Mary Brown and Rose Blue both of Cleveland, Ohio, two brothers, Charles Brown and James Carson (Jackie) both of Fordyce, AR; one uncle Mitchell Egeston of Florissant, MO; his favorite Nephew, Nelson Simmons (Tina Sheree) of Irving, TX, whose daily phone calls and humorous conversations always centered around the “girlfriend” and needing to get “his belt”; Cousin/Sister, Sabrina and Virgil Taylor, who served as his caregivers since his relocation to Little Rock, Alleen Daniels (Wilburn) who lovingly cared for him as an employee of Home Instead Home Care. Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews, several of whom share a birthday with him. Although Lemuel never had any children, he took great pride in all his nieces and nephews and knew each of their birthdays.
Many thanks to Sally Carson, his DHS nurse, Stephanie Sheard, former caregiver, the staff at Home Instead Home Care, Barbara Forte, his neighbor and friend from Chicago, and the New Grace
Church family whom he loved dearly.
