Margaret Louise Scott was born on November 16, 1930, from the matrimonial union of Carra H.
Hughes and Vernice L. Hughes, the third of seven siblings.
She was raised in a loving home in the Mabelvale area and later moved to the Stephens Community.
As a child she attended Stephens Elementary School and Dunbar High School where she finished
her education. She then furthered her education at Grinnell Liberal Arts College in Iowa.
Our mother and her six beautiful children joined Willie L. Scott, Jr., in matrimony in July 1959, and
from this union five children were born.
She attended nursing school while raising her children and earned her license as a CNA. After she
earned her license, she worked at Jean’s Nursing Home for 20+ years.
After retiring she enjoyed attending church, shopping, spending time with her children and
grandchildren, working crossword puzzles, cooking and watching her favorite TV shows which were
The Price is Right, Gunsmoke, and Judge Judy.
Early on she dedicated her life to Christ and upon her passing she was a member of Gospel
Lighthouse Pentecostal Church.
She is preceded in death by her parents Carra Hughes, Sr. and Vernice Hughes; her husband, Willie
L. Scott Jr.; six siblings Carra Hughes, Jr., Alma Hughes Terry, Virginia Hughes, Diane Hughes
Johnson, Sandra Hughes, and Shirley Pennington; three sons, Kelton Scott, Willie L. Scott, III, and
Spencer Scott.
Our mother leaves to cherish her memories four sons Gilbert “Gil” Jones (Linda), Dennis Jones,
Charles “CV” Jones (Cheryl), Timothy Scott (Pamela); four daughters, Regina Colclough (Rick), Vicki
Hawkins-Davis, Cathy Tidwell, and Darlene Poole of Atlanta, GA; her grandchildren, great-
grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and a host of other family and friends.
She was the foundation of our family, a devoted mother, a guiding matriarch, and a source of strength
and wisdom for generations. As the last surviving child of Carra and Vernice Hughes, her departure
marks the closing of a cherished chapter in our family’s history. She carried forward the legacy of
those who came before her with grace, resilience, and unwavering love, leaving behind a foundation
that will continue to shape us for years to come. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her
influence and the values she instilled will live on in all of us forever.
