Richard Broyles, born on March 31, 1951, in Holly Grove, Arkansas, was a man who lived life with purpose, passion, and pride. The son of the late Earlee and James L. Broyles, Richard grew up with a drive for excellence that shone through in everything he did. He graduated as an honor student from Holly Grove High School, where his talent on the basketball court earned him a scholarship and set the stage for a lifetime of achievement
Richard’s journey of service and adventure began when he attended Mary Holmes Junior College in Mississippi to study physical education. He then answered the call to serve his country by joining the Air Force, where he excelled and rose to the rank of Technical Sergeant (Tsgt). During his 20 years in the military, Richard’s dedication and excellence were recognized with numerous accolades, including the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Achievement Award, and the National Defense Service Medal. His career took him around the globe, from the scenic beauty of Rimini, Italy, to the bustling streets of London, England. Whether stationed in Germany, Louisiana, or Montana, Richard’s sense of duty and commitment to his fellow service members never wavered.
In 2000, Richard found love and partnership when he married Mary Mason of Little Rock. Together, they built a life rooted in hard work and mutual respect. Richard brought his strong work ethic to the Arkansas Highway Department and Arkansas Children’s Hospital, where he made a difference in countless lives until his retirement in 2013. Known for his kindness, honesty, and unwavering fairness, Richard was a man whose strength of character left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Richard’s greatest joy in life was his family. He cherished his children, Kenyada and Sydney, and took immense pride in their accomplishments. On August 10th, 2024, Richard stepped into eternity, joining his parents, James and Earlee Broyles, and his siblings, James Jr., Celie, and Mayola, who preceded him in death.
Richard leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by his beloved children, Sydney Broyles and Kenyada (Chris) Smith of Little Rock; his bonus children, Randall and Katese Mason, also of Little Rock; his brother Lacy (Harriett) Broyles of Cincinnati, Ohio; and his sisters Debra (Greg) Parham of Centerville, Georgia, Sidney Nan Broyles, Camila Broyles, Ruth Terry, and Margaret Broyles, all of Cincinnati, Ohio.
