MR. VERNON LEE WITHERS, SR completed his earthly journey on
January 17, 2025, at the age of 87, surrounded by his loving wife and family. He
was born on June 18, 1937, in Woodson, Arkansas to the late Rev. James L. and
Mrs. Ruby Withers. He was their only son and affectionally called Dick by his
dad.
Vernon was a 1956 graduate of JC Cook High School, Wrightsville, Arkansas, and
served in the U.S. Military following high school. On April 19, 1959, he married
his sweetheart and forever partner, Eunice A. Lawson, and together shared the
birth and parenting of four sons and an adopted son. Vernon always wanted the
best for his family and demonstrated this through his values, character,
commitment, and work ethic.
He attended Arkansas Baptist College at night while working and nurturing his
family, to obtain a bachelor’s degree. He advanced his education by obtaining a
master’s degree from Ouachita Baptist University, Arkadelphia, Arkansas,
demonstrating for his family and others the importance of education and
perseverance. He also served as a Scoutmaster.
Vernon worked in church ministries with his father and other pastors and
served as a Sunday School teacher and deacon at the First Baptist Church
Woodson, Arkansas and the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Higgins, Arkansas for
many years.
He was employed by several companies including the former Pfeifer-Blass
department store in downtown Little Rock, Arkansas, and retired as a Personnel
Manager for the Champion International-Hoerner Waldorf Corporation, Little
Rock, Arkansas in 1999. After retirement, Vernon remained an avid self-
employed farmer who grew and sold fresh produce at farmers markets around
central Arkansas. He also loved deer hunting. He was a member of the Arkansas
Farmers Association and the Owens Hunting Club.
Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, Rev. James L. and Mrs. Ruby
Withers; sons, Vernon L. Withers, Jr and James L. Withers; daughter-in law,
Leatrice Withers; and sister, Mayola Luster.
He leaves a lasting legacy and treasured memories to his devoted wife of 65
years, Eunice Withers; sons, Basil Withers (Gladys) of Little Rock, Arkansas,
Anthony Withers, of Richmond, Virginia, and Derwin Lawson (Denise) of Las
Vegas, Nevada; grandchildren, Stoney Withers of St. Louis, Missouri, Nayleah
Withers and Sydney Withers of Richmond Virginia, Anthony Withers, Jr. and
Antoinette Jensen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; sisters, Emma Burton of
Hensley, Arkansas and Ruby Allen of Little Rock, Arkansas; brother-in-law, Willie
Luster of Pahrump, Nevada; nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the
righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
II Timothy 4: 7-8
